陡峭学

这样的秘密
我将只告诉明眼的内行人,
白云的柔软十分陡峭。

鸽子的盘旋已经结束,
它们的飞翔留下的空白
也显得十分陡峭。

灵魂不会输给崎岖,
但必须承认,出发前的寂静
已深深陷入陡峭。

孤独的行进中,
一个人必须学会和绳子谈心;
因为一旦涉及是否可靠,信念也很陡峭。

其实事后想想,像这样的
语调轻柔的问询:“你准备好了吗”——
也曾让古老的回声陡峭不已。

Theory of Steepness

Such secrets
I will only tell the experienced with a keen eye;
The softness of white clouds is very steep.

The doves' circling is over,
The void left behind by their flight
Also appears very steep.

The soul won't lose against ruggedness,
But one must admit this—the silence prior to taking off
Has fallen deeply into steepness.

On a lonely march
One must learn to converse with the ropes,
Because, if being reliable matters, faith is also very steep.

Actually, in hindsight,  the inquiries with a soft tone
Such as  "Are you ready"——
They also made the ancient echoes lastingly steep.

蝴蝶先生

你的聪明的愤怒震裂过
蝴蝶的棺柩,把伟大的文学
变成了一只西班牙斗牛
向塞万提斯猛冲过去。

如果刺中的话,已经死去的人
也依然会流血:但这样的事
再想挤进花边新闻都会很费劲;
“《堂吉诃德》最理想的结局

就是狂奔的铁蹄下的
那堆著名的碎纸片。”
那一年,人性的枷锁
在巴尔扎克的咖啡里已泡得

黝黑铮亮;洛丽塔还很嫩,
几乎与玛丽莲﹒梦露同龄;
你也没料到正是她发明了男欢
女爱的新配方:管丈夫叫爸爸。

“这是她们俩之间的事情,与我无关。”
当然啦。任何表白都将被人类的悬念所利用。
小说家的责任不过是阻止道德
进一步沦为“弱者的武器”。

据传记作家挖掘,你只经历过
一次婚外恋:“很有趣,像吸可卡因。”
但是你说“也许会令大伙失望,
我很快就戒掉了;根本就没上瘾。”

Mr. Butterfly

Your clever rage once cracked
The butterfly's coffin, and turned the great literature
Into a Spanish bull
Lunging fiercely at Cervantes.

If stabbed, a dead man
Still bleeds: But it is hard for such things
To get into the tabloids again;
“The ideal ending of ‘Don Quixote’

Is that famous pile of scrap paper
Under the mad iron hoofs."
In that year, the shackles of humanity,
Submerged in Balzac's coffee, turned

Black and bright; Lolita was still very young,
Almost the same age as Marilyn Monroe;
You didn't know she was the one who invented
The new recipe for love: calling her husband daddy.

"It's between them, and has nothing to do with me."
Of course. Any confession will be exploited in a suspense plot of mankind.
A novelist's duty is nothing more than to stop morality
From being further reduced to a "weapon of the weak".

Accordingto the biographers, you've had
Only one extramarital affair: "It was fun, like inhaling cocaine."
Yet you said, "It may disappoint everybody,
But I quit it very quickly; I did not become addicted at all."

水獭丛书

湮没的时间蜕变成
记忆模糊的杂草;从上游
到下游,植物的茂密
更信赖低矮的风向;向前探寻的话,
每一步,都很深,深到洞穴
就在附近。一抬头,只有白云的影子
是明亮的。从半小时里
见到的青蛙的数量判断,
你的直觉似乎是对的,
水獭的繁殖期已接近尾声。
而要说清楚喜爱它们的理由
则意味着你的角色
必须重新转换。首先是
深刻的检讨:你弄丢的水域
已被它们出没成快乐的家园。
其次,悔悟也必须涉及底限:
因为你弃用的名字已被它们带进
陌生而又遥远的深水区,
迅速升降,水花飞溅,
直到河流的声音听上去
像是从母体里发出的密语;
甚至你弄丢的姿态也被它们进化成
又粗又长的尾巴。总之,
如果理智之舵也有一个同样的尾巴,
你可以从它们身上找到
你曾在人身上丢失过的所有东西。

Otter Books

Time in oblivion metamorphoses into
Weeds with vague memory; from upstream
To down stream, the plants' rich thickness
Trusts more the low winds' directions; if searching forward,
Every step is deep, so deep that the cave
Is just nearby.  Up there, only the shadow of the white cloud
Is bright.  Judging by
The number of frogs seen within half an hour,
Your intuition seems to be right,
It is near the end of the otters' breeding season.
Yet, to make it clear why you like them,
Your role would have to be changed again.
First a deep review: The area of water which you lost
Has been turned into a happy home by them through frequenting it.
Secondly, repentance must also involve the bottom line:
Because your abandoned name was carried by them
Into strange and faraway deep water,
—running up and down rapidly, water splashing—
Until the river sound appeared to be
Secret words coming from the maternal body;
Even the posture you lost has been turned by them,
Through evolution, into
A thick, long tail.  In a word,
If the rudder of reason has the same tail,
Then you can find in them
Everything you've ever lost in humans.

山茶花丛书

命运的仓库仿佛
就在附近,濛濛细雨中
洇湿的街道泛着
金属的冷光。握紧一个拳头,
无边的孤独立刻就有了
一个漂亮的核心。再次睁开眼睛,
很明显,世界的寂静
属于此时心跳是否
会因白鹭的身影而有所加快;
并非只出现过一次,海鸟的抛物线
扔进紫燕的大回环时,
神奈川的溪水似乎也嗅到了
远处浪涛的气息。这样的安静里
必然有一个这样的原始,
而这样的原始里必然会有
这样一种的邂逅:只要它
静静地绽放在那里,
那角落便是未被认出的
一个神迹。即使它还没能
从曼陀罗那里完全收回
一个名字,它镇静的美丽
也足以驯服人生的恍惚;
它不需要你弯下身,在树根旁
放上一笔小费;如果你
不曾意识到它等你
等了这么久,几乎将你当成了
唯一的人;说明你
辜负了它对你的完全开放,
你还从未像它的重瓣那样抵达过
你身上的一种客观状态。

Camellia Books

The warehouse of fate seems
To be nearby; in a drizzle,
The wet street is flooded with
Cold light of metal; Clenching a fist,
The unbounded loneliness acquires atonce
A beautiful core. Opening your eyes again,
You’ll clearly see that the silence of the world
Hinges on whether, at this moment, the heart beats
Will be somewhat accelerated because of the egrets' silhouettes;
They didn't appear just once; as the seabirds’ parabolas
Were thrown into the big circling of the purple swallows,
The streams of Kanagawa also seemed to have smelled
The distant waves. In such silence
There must be such primitiveness,
And in such a primitiveness there must be
Such an encounter: as long as it
Quietly blooms there,
That corner is an unrecognized
Miracle. Even if it hasn't
Completely recovered a name
From datura, its calm beauty
Is enough to tame the trances of life;
It doesn't require you to bend down and leave a tip
Next to the tree roots;
If you didn't realize that it waited for you
For so long, and almost considered you
To be the one and only person for it, then you
Did not value its full openness to you;
You have never reached, like its double petals,
An objective state of you.

菠萝简史

插在它上面的
长满锐齿的绿剑,有时会
令你下意识地去抚摸
插在我们身上的剑。
看上去不是很美,
但粗糙的外表,恰恰凹凸了
一个热带的漂亮;也促使甜蜜本身
爱上了一场特殊的搏斗。
在将它放进盘子里之前,
针对我们的淘汰和鉴别已在悄悄进行。
要知道不仅是你一个人没见过
大象是怎么吃菠萝的;
相同情形下,香蕉,通常是更好的选择。
黄色的菠萝只对一件事有兴趣:
一旦手指上粘有它的黏液,
人类所有的吵架就该听起来像一次吮吸。

A Brief History of Pineapple

Stuck into it are the green swords,
With many sharp teeth, which sometimes
Make you subconsciously touch
The swords which are stuck into our bodies.
It doesn't look very beautiful,
But its rough surface, full of concavity and convexity,
Renders a tropical prettiness; it also helps the sweetness itself
To fall in love with a special struggle.
Before we put it on the plate,
The sieving and identification of us had already been going on quietly.
You should know you're not the only one who hasn't seen
How elephants eat pineapples;
In the same situation, bananas are usually a better choice.
The yellow pineapple is only interested in one thing:
Once one gets its slime on one's fingers,
All human quarrels should sound like a sucking.

候鸟

如果没有这些激动的小黑点,
我们几乎已开始习惯
天空如迟钝的坟墓。
而仅仅凭借有点疲倦的
注目礼,天空深处,
自由和空虚将很难区分。
为什么我会如此担心——
假如没有这样的区分,
人不可能意识到,这些准时
出现在昏暗的天边的候鸟,
并非在炫耀美丽的习性
可以战胜时间的冷酷。
它们的迁徙是对生命之弧的测量;
它们另有仪式感,以至于
高傲的飞翔中,它们的颜色
深如灵魂的酵母,摩擦着
世界的风景,以及生命的渴望
因这陌生的摩擦而趋向永恒。

Migratory Birds

If it wasn't for those exciting little black dots,
We’d almost have got used to
The sky being a dull tomb.
And, just with a somewhat tired gaze as a salute,
it is hard to distinguish between freedom and void
deep in the sky.
Why am I so worried—
Without such a distinction,
One can't possibly realize that these migratory birds, punctually
Appearing on the dim horizon,
Are not showing off the capability of their beautiful habits
To defeat the cold-heartedness of time.
Their migration is a measurement of the arc of life;
In addition, they have a sense of ritual to the extent that
In their proud flight, their colors
Are as deep as the soul of yeast, rubbing
The sceneries of the world and the desire of life.
By this strange friction they approach eternity.

叶如钢,数学家、诗人、翻译家,美国加州大学圣巴巴拉分校终身教授,中国科学技术大学长江讲座教授,曾任德国波鸿大学终身教授,曾在斯坦福大学任教。在多家诗歌平台主持过翻译,《雅典学院—叶如钢翻译交流平台》创办人和主持人,担任《加拿大海外作家协会》名誉会长、《诗人名典》顾问、《全球诗人艺术家月刊》首席副总编辑等。出版过两部诗集,有诗歌作品和翻译作品发表在中国、美国、意大利、西班牙、瑞典、德国、新西兰等国的刊物和微刊上。翻译作品包括多种语言诗歌中译,和中国古典诗歌、现代诗歌英译。
