Mother

Tonight, I see two eyes floating in the heavens,
rustic, candid, grief-swollen eyes.
Tonight, these two eyes almost speak tome,
“Weep, child. Weep. Be strong.”

From the earth I gaze up, watching these eyes
for a long time.
Your eyes are like sky.
Your eyes are nothing like dew or grapes.
They are like sky.

I can’t stop what glitters in my eyes,
what makes them flicker and shine in the May night.
My eyes, your eyes. So far,
right here. How can I forget tonight?

Your eyes travel and wherever they go,
they make a new sky, mother. Tonight
and every night, as long as I stand under the sky,
I see you, radiant.

The Chinese Characters

a Chinese character.
as I gaze at it
it opens itself
till  I become aware of
its most secret parts.

a Chinese character
opens itself
and closes itself.
the interval
exhausts my entire life.

Trembling
it trembles
as I tremble
the building, I

the land trembles
the washing machine trembles when tumbling dry
the insides of a fish, just
disemboweled, tremble
the corner of the mouth of a country woman trembles
as she flies off on collision with them in ibus
I tremble with it
the land, I

the sky trembles
its silk rent by the lightning
the child trembles
having been in a high fever for 3 days
the thief trembles
his neck feeling the cold
the overpass trembles
as a truck, heavily loaded, is rumbling across it
the ruins tremble
as time is singing a triumphant song
the heart trembles
when death is tightening its grip on the throat
along with it I tremble
the sky, I

my loved one
trembles in the sick bed
and I tremble, too
I, I, I…

Even Nothingness Won't End

Even nothingness won’t end.
Winds surge on
overhead. If love’s extinguished,
something burns still.
Beyond freedom
nothing is more free.

Nothing is the husk
of emptiness.
New moss extends its green.
Syllables of songs pierce clouds.
Poets raise their chopsticks.

Even nothingness won’t end.
With a glance, someone perforates apaper window,
changing his whole life.
Can’t keep living? In the space
between nothing and ness
you must.

If nothingness ends, fine,
no chance to write anything.
Tall, fat, short, skinny, it all concludes
as we will! At this street corner
nothingness flips my shirt-tail.

Fish

Such clever fish.
Hunched in each belly
or curled in each tail,
someone must steer
the wise head.

Such clever fish.
Don’t think I’d gain strength if I ate one,
but here it comes, chopped in a tureen
or whole on the platter.

Such clever fish.
I sit by the water sometimes,
alone, envious. How they slip
without effort to the depths.
