Canal and Grandfather

The Canal is humble, humbler than all things on earth
It unfolds itself generously in the humblest manner
It never hides its secrets
Never competes with others

My grandfather was humble, humbler than a plantain
Humbler than a snail, a mole cricket, or an ant
He was indeed a part of the earth

He tried to help the Canal up
The Canal tried to lift him up over its head
Sometimes they gave each other a knowing smile
Sometimes they stared at each other with tearful eyes
Cannot say a word

My grandfather went along with the Canal
He strolled hand in hand with it now and then
Sometimes raced against it to see who could run faster and farther

He never quarreled with it
They were intimate brothers. The Canal talked much
Grandfather listened to it quietly
Grandfather towed and sculled the boat, sweat dripping from his head
Then the Canal wiped his sweat again and again
And sang gentle songs for him

Grandfather has left the Canal for long
I come to the Canal
Finding that it still grieves for him

Canal and Father

In 1937, the Canal took my father away
From the Japanese enemies’ artillery fire, with a thousand of hands,
Patting his shoulders ceaselessly

In 1938, my helpless cornered grandma
Strode over the dolorous canal
And pleased another grandmother to raise my father

In 1948, my father put a bet with the Canal
On who could run farther...

The Canal, father’s destiny
Father’s soul, father’s never healing scar

Now, on the sky, father stares at the Canal
Affectionately, humming out the past
Between them

And I am listening, never tired

Canal and Sunshine

Sunshine comes from afar, far away
Tired, it nestles against the Canal’s chest to have a rest

When it wakes up, the Canal shakes his white hair
“My kid, when you look at this world,
You’d better turn a blind eye to something
But when you look at me, just keep your eyes wide open”

“Look at the deep wrinkles on my forehead
The scars on my bones, and the love, confusion, and sadness
Deep in my blood...”

Sunshine unfolds the Canal, like opening a book
It discovers many of his secrets
Then it closes the book, and tastes
The love, confusion and sadness together with him

Canal and Rain

Rain doesn’t like living in heaven, so it rushes into the Canal
Like a freed prisoner
Singing the most joyful songs in the world

People always say raindrops are tears
What a hackneyed metaphor!
They are certainly not poets

Actually, rain is a special bird
It flies from 5,000 years ago, flies from 5,000  years later
Flies from the minds of some unusual figures

No wonder that the Canal can’t wait to jump up to welcome
As the rain heads for it

Now, the rain becomes the Canal, the Canal is the rain
Now, the Canal often runs in a flying manner
Now, wild goose and white crane regard the Canal as their older brother

The rain is proud of its rebirth
And speaks to humans through the mouth of the Canal
“I’m reborn, I’m reborn, I’m reborn...”

Canal and Snow

Snow falls like a white elephant form the sky
Carrying mysteries of heaven and mischievousness of all gods

The Canal dances, clasping the white elephant in its arms
They throw coldness and loneliness
On a couple of pretentious stones

River water emits mellow wine aroma
The ancient stone bridge gets intoxicated again and again
It wants every passer to relive the snow-covered Tang dynasty

People cross the bridge and feign affection for Emperor Taizong and Xuanzong
Heads bowed, they bump against Du Fu who is enjoying the snow view
The great poet screams out while falling into the river
Then all the fishes and shrimps become poets

Suddenly I find the white elephant is not from the sky
It emerges from the Canal
From its mysterious bottom

Canal and Women

The women who drink canal water will grow into the Canal

They’ll never grow into the Mudanjiang River
The Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Pearl River or the Brahmaputra
They’ll just grow into the Canal

They feed the stars in the Canal, like feeding fishes and shrimps
They arrange for the sun and the moon to guard the Canal in turn
They would rather wrong the sky than wrong the Canal

The Canal is their past and future
The Canal is their blood and face
Their arms and breasts

The Canal is not the bird. Instead, they are the bird
They can fly with the Canal on their back
The Canal doesn’t know how to love, but they can teach it
To write romantic love letters; they can teach it
To be moderately restrained and debauched

They will definitely grow into the Canal
Maybe late at this night, they will release
All of their passion; their confession of love
Is now explicit and then implicit
They shoulder white sails and time

And finally become the Canal

White Clouds over the Canal

The Canal and white clouds never compete with each other for being high or low

The white cloud stands high in the sky, but she is often lower than the Canal
The Canal lies low on the ground, but he is often higher than white cloud

The cloud knows that her height
Is just an illusion. The Canal knows
That his lowness is the delusion of some bugs

The Canal is busy with his own business:
To nourish the crops, villages and love on the banks
The white cloud is busy with her own business:
To maintain her elegance and detachment
And give some enlightenment to the confused humans

The Canal flows higher and higher
In the distance, he stands shoulder to shoulder with the sky

Canal and Poet

The Canal says: I am a poem
A poem about death and rebirth
A scorching or freezing poem
I have everything flowing through me, every punctuation mark
Every Chinese character, every pain, confusion
Memory, oblivion, empathy...

The poet says: I am a canal
I was explored by destiny. I search
For the exiled souls and the secrets
Of stones and insects
I was redeemed by tears and blood, by doubts
And piety. Silence is a betrayal of myself

In the heavy fog of time, the Canal and the poet
Stare at each other for a long, long time. They observe
Each other’s blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, brain sulci...
They absorb the noblest and purest part
From each other’s body
They gather pace and chase the sun together

Sound of Canal

In the morning, the flowing river water
Sounds like villagers, in twos and threes, carrying hoes to the fields
Their greetings and small talks
Exude the scent of dream and sunshine

In the dark night, the flowing river water
Sounds like the whispering of lovers
As they talk affectionately
They join hands with each other

Breeze ripples the Canal’s surface. It sounds
Like the chitchat of families. As they chat away
Some grow up while some grow old

A carp jumps out of the water. It sounds
Like the burst of laughter of a melancholic man:
He dodges successfully the doom of going to Hell

Rain drops splash against the Canal. It sounds
Likea debate on good and evil
No matter how intense the debate is
The good is always cautious, while the evil
Remains arrogant

Birds flap the water surface with their wings. It sounds
Like the announcement of a ceremony master
Before the performance of a symphony orchestra in amphitheatre. Then Symphony ofFate
Begins to echo all over the earth

Autumn of the Canal

The Canal carries autumn on his shoulder
Like carrying the woman he loves

She exudes the fragrance of rice and apple
In her plump body there hide numerous miracles

In the Canal’s body there also hide numerous miracles
They salute, and fondle each other

The sky is as high as the fantasies of a great man
Their souls rise like white clouds as they look up at it

But he thinks of the Cross, blood
And the severe winter that would abduct him next second

He chooses solitude and misery as a gentleman would
He delivers speeches to mountains, rivers, grass and woods as a martyr would

Finally, he makes up his mind and pushes the sad autumn away
He urges her over and over: Take care!

They agree on what they will bring when they meet next year
-A teardrop, or a new wound
